Canan was set to meet her contact at seven. She was told to look for a red head in a green sweater. The elf sat in a cafe, a cup of herbal tea on the glass table top in front of her. With her index finger, she swirled around the droplets of condensation. Despite her abject hate for Josh, he'd given her a crash course in he and Tom's latest venture before he disappeared.
"Canan?"The woman who stood in front of her was joined by another. Before she could go on defense, the short locked woman raised a card. She was a Pendragon too.
The red head turned and hugged her. "Thank you so much, Abbie." Her voice was soft, wounded. Her voice was soft, wounded. "Please thank your husband too."
As her associate headed off, Canan motioned for her charge to sit and extended a cup of tea. They drank in silence. "Are you expecting anyone else?"
"No, Im all there is."
"Family?"
"Dead."
"Friends?"
The red head let out a wheezy laugh. "Who can make friends in time like these?"
"Well, Siohban, I'd like to be your friend." They stood, walking into the street where any conversation would be drowned out by the roar of the cars, people and whatever else. "May I ask what you are?"
"Sidhe."
She nodded, "I know Honor well. She's like family."
The girls eyes lit up. "You've met our Lady?"
"She used to baby sit me." Canan lead her to a car, letting her in the side door. After much pleading, Tom had spent a weekend teaching her to drive- Needless to say, much hilarity ensued. The rental shop hadn't been too pleased when the car came back dented... But the car had been under Josh's name.
"You seem very home here."
"Home's what you make of it."
"I haven't been at home for here in a long time." The redhead tossed her long hair. "I used to have a reason to be here too... Her name was Alexis. She was the most beautiful creature I've ever seen. A man broke into her house, raped and killed her. For no reason. And what's worse? I couldn't even call the cops because I don't have any papers. I loved her and witha ll my magic, I couldnt do a thing."
It made her think. What would she do without him? Taking her hand, she gave her a winsome smile. "You'll be home soon."
The last part of the run was the riskiest. They couldn't just blink into Gaia because they could be killed by guards or Circlet. The Red Hands were no longer honoring the mass exodus of immortals. The trick was to be quicker than their guns. Parking at the edge of the forest, Canan looked at her. "Ready?"
"As I'll ever be."
Taking the Fey's hand, they flashed once, twice, three times. Each time they did, an alert went off and more guards swarmed. Like dogs with a scent, they moved in almost pack formation. Canan normally would only make a forth jump but it was too risky. Slipping all the way back to the beginning, she smiled at Siobhan and made a final flash forward. The elf shoved the Fey over the boarder, feeling hte magic close behind them. The welcome crew aka men from Canan's unit, came over. Laughing, they helped both girls stand.
"You scared us Princess. "An older elf rested on her shoulder. "We expected you twenty minutes ago."
"Sorry, Gibby, we ran into a bit of an issue. Nothing I couldn't handle."
"That's our girl."
"You're in good hands now, Siobhan." Canan told her, "But there's somewhere I have to go." Flashing, Canan made her way back into the mortal world; going to find her reason to be there...
