Personality: Do you like games?/ Matthew does. He likes them a lot. Then again, it's in his nature. The very nature of the chase, the cat and mouse, appeals to him. So what if that makes him a bit of a sadist? It's all in good fun. The problem is, without a little excitement, he's apt to get bored. Love is all well and good but it's too secure. Same with the idea of home- This is a rebel without a cause that has no want for a place to lay his hat.
His job fits perfectly to his state of mind. No loyalties, never in one place at a time. Now, don't get me wrong Matthew hates being alone. Not that he ever stays around long enough to wear out his welcome. He thrives on the chaos of the group mentality. It gives him and his inner demons a chance to play. As a Sphinx, he lives and kills by a different set of rules. When he gives into the ancient power, you'll know because it all starts with a riddle.
History: Matthew Arif Lyons was born in Cairo, Egypt. His Father, Andres, was an antiques dealer who came to the city to find its hidden treasure, arrived at an estate sale. The man who had passed had been a city official and business man, ruling his own failing empire. The young French man came expecting to find a few baubles but nothing more. As he wandered around the large home, he ducked into a room marked ‘private' to satisfy his own curiousity. He stumbled into the private quarters of the ladies of the house. Mrs Khattah was outraged by the stranger's impudence She was about to call security when her daughter stopped her. Mina found the bumbling foreigner cute- So she invited him to dinner. The rest as they say, is history. Andres revitalized the Khattah empure and took over as C.E.O.
This was the world Matthew was born into: Wealth and cut throat elegance. At the time of his birth, Andres was away. He had meetings in Taipei and Hong Kong. When Mina went into labor, she was terrified and only wanted her husband to be there. He didn't make it. The young woman never could bond with the thing that came out of her; couldn't even think of it as a child. When he got back, the new father hired nannies so the child and mother would never be alone.
Because of this, Matt grew up to be a cold child. He spent most of his time alone inside his family's compound. His Father, although warm and loving, found it hard to deal with a son who was so distant. When Matt was six, he was taken to the market as a treat. Being a rather clever and curious child, he managed to get away from his nanny to explore. It didn't bother him when he realized he was lost. He was used to being alone more so that his Mother had given birth to two more children- daughters that she loved. Stealing some fruit and water from a vendor, he ran away into the desert.
When he was so lost he thought he would die, out of drink and water, Matt realized he may have made a mistake. And that's when the tribe found him. The nomadic people of the desert were more urban legend than reality to the people of civilized Cairo but they saved the little boy. The scavengers didn't know what to do with the child- So they brought him back to the camp. He listened as they argued whether to take him back to the city, hold him for ransom or kill him. While the men were debating, a woman came in. She looked like a spider: tall and thin with long limbs. Dressed in brown and tan, she blended into the sand. Her name was Sekhmet and she knew there was something special about the boy.
She smuggled the little boy back to town. Andres was so happy to see him, he offered the woman a job to take care of his son. And there began Matty's other life- No longer was he a normal child but a protegee to the desert queen. Sekhmet told him that he was an old soul: a sphinx. Matt didn't even know what that was. But she taught him- She groomed him in combat, sword play and survival. Most importantly, she taught him to tap into his magic.
When Matt was twelve, he and Sekhmet left. They began to travel the world. There was too much in the world to stay in one spot, she told him- They didn't travel in luxury. No, most nights they ended up camping in fields or barns. They stole and lied, cheated. The life of crime didn't bother him. When he got older, he made connections with different groups, did jobs for them. That's how he met Kaliq and subsequently Danny.
