Soaked and shivering, Lexi collapsed against a tree, trying to collect her thoughts & her breath. She had done nothing but run for what seemed like days. Trying to outrun her last memory... Declan was coming home from another night at the pub, and she ran to meet him. He didn't even need to ask what she wanted, just grinned the way he always did as he swept her up into a hug. "We'll hunt as soon as we get to the town borders." He whispered in her ear. "I'll race you." He practically dropped her on her ass as he raced for the trees, her at his heels. She didn't even notice all the townspeople watching them as they disappeared into the night.
She loved the feel of the wind as she raced through the world after the only person she thought truly understood her. She kept one eye on the stars and one eye out for the streak of silver on black that was her brother's pelt. They weaved in & out of the trees, at times she was ahead, other times he was nipping at her heels as if to say "come on, this way". No other member of the family had yet undergone the change, so they ran in secret, & she liked it better this way. Our own bond. But tonight, something different was in the air, she could sense it. The moon was full, but encircled with red. "Blood on the moon always means trouble, sister. It is best that we never venture out on these nights." He always used to warn her, but she wondered if he noticed tonight. As she rounded into the clearing, she saw she was right.
Torchlight mixed with moonlight, & she nearly cried out seeing her brother surrounded by villagers. He had shifted back into human form and was covered in blood and open wounds from pitchforks, bruises from stones. They were all drunk & cursing him, shoving him, but he was silent, his eyes were skyward, always on Mother Moon as he called her. Lexi crept forward on her belly, ears pinned down, tail between her legs, every inch shaking as she tried to get closer to the mob unseen. Her scent caught the wind & reached her brother, who shifted immediately & darted forward, just to be stopped by the sharp stab of pitchforks. His yelp was met with her angry snarl, fear replaced with rage, and the men turned.
One minute they were met with red fur & gleaming teeth, then fur turned to flesh, red hair hanging loose about Lexi's face, eyes just as wild as the animal she just was. For a moment, the men didn't know how to react. Most didn't when they had a naked woman in front of them. Then two reached out & grabbed her arms & dragged her back to her brother, who was pacing. She knew the look in his eyes. He was poising to attack. She touched his arm to calm him, at the same time one of the men touched her arm.
"Well we've got two of these fiends, but it seems a waste to dispose of this one just yet." He licked his lips & took a step towards her, but was smacked by another man, told to wait his turn. An argument ensued; crude words on how they planned to each use her before her brother's eyes. Declan shifted again, as did Lexi in hopes of providing a distraction so her brother could escape. It worked. The drunken, randy crowd ran after "the red vixen", throwing their pitchforks to scare her, turn her back towards them. One hit her side, & she yelped, crumpling. Stunned, she couldn't help the shift & lay naked before the crowd. One fool strutted proudly towards her, undoing his clothes as he went, not noticing the silver-streaked shadow that stalked him. As he glanced towards his comrades, he met only with yellow eyes & teeth as Declan lunged at his throat. The scream roused Lexi, & she sat up to stare down the barrel of a rifle. She screamed his name, & Declan stopped. As brother & sister locked eyes, the man shifted the rifle towards Declan & grinned. Brother yelled for sister to run as the shot was fired. Lexi watched in horror as her brother's eyes shifted from the deep yellow of his wolf to the chocolate brown she loved so much, then the light faded from them completely. Blood pooled on his naked chest as the men turned their attention back to her.
She could not tear her eyes from her brother's lifeless form. Her muscles were as lead. She could not move. She watched each man's face full of hate behind the torch's glow & was ready to accept her fate, when a fierce wind blew & the sky went pitch black. Some of the men went into a panic & began to cry witch, while others frantically tried to re-light the torches. Mother Moon shielded her daughter as Declan's last word screamed in Lexi's mind & she willed herself to shift and tear off through the trees. She ran as fast as she could, ran through the tears, the rage, the hunger. She ran till she could no longer feel her paws. She found herself in a place she had never seen or smelled before, yet somehow she felt safe. That thought, & the scent of the tree she was leaning against were her last conscious acts, as she tumbled exhausted into the snow.

Jordyn had been having a tough few weeks. Leaving the pack lands and her home was always going to be one of those things that irritated her natural internal radar. But what had been harder was leaving behid her lover. Her mate? Well, maybe, the Mother was playing games with her sensibilities right then and she wasn't all together too sure. Love him dearly as she did, the M word was a big thing to suggest to the man she missed so intensely. But leaving had been something she needed. Everything she'd told the pack had been true. She had several reasons for this short vaccation; River. Her exhusband was a thorn in her side, literally he had caused the ailment with which Jordyn walked when he shot her several months before. Then there was Draven. The second part of her pair of boys. Her mischievious sons. If only Draven had been lke Tucker, if only he had been a wolf through and through, but alas her eldest sons love of hunting came with a gun not with fang and tooth. Still, after meeting with them both, spending time in their company and with her newest granddaughter, jordyn didn't feel complete, she had't felt the compassion she wanted and wished to feel. Were these men really dead to her after all? Now there were so many reasons to go home. She'd been found out for one. A surgeon here, with a seriously sick daughter had found out who she was, caught her on a hunt. Casually he'd taken her to lunch and suggested a propsition. One that had solved that constant iche in her leg and healed away the silver sickness. The feeling was intense, it gave back her mobility and since the operation Jordyn didn't feel so old. But more than that. More than her own health, she had found she was pregnant. The news was a lead balloon, the elephant in the room - but there were people that needed to know and home truely called to her. She'd come to say her goodbyes to the friend and alley she'd made her, hugging a slowly healing child and accepting a chase kiss from her father. Patrick reminded her there would always be a place in both their hearts, explained to her that he could never thank her enough. And Jordyn smiled gently before turning her back to leave them behind. Hopefully their new life would be everything they wanted it to be. On the street her keen eyes saw the girl in the distance, but what was more prominant was her smell. It carried on the wind, leaked into the sow around them and caused Jordyn to pause. Her mind split on what to do. Another wolf? She hadn't met another wolf out here, not since her family had set up home in Gaia. Not since they had their pack and their rules and their way. Did this mean she was on another packs territory? Could she have been so stupid as to walk in blindly? Jordyn didn't think she'd lost her touch that badly. The old alpha wet her lips and watched from afar as the girl slumped down. Then...instinct decided she should investigate. Crunching through the snow, she went over moving freely for the first time in wat felt like a life time. "Easy-" She whispered encouragingly, tentatively taking the girl by the arm and helping her stagger upright. "-you'll do yourself injury if you keep panicking like that." The smell of sweat and panick oozed from the girl like perfume.

Lexi's mind was so clouded by hunger and exhaustion, that she wasn't even sure of what she heard. A woman's voice speaking to her from beyond the darkness. She almost called out "Mom?" but she knew she was too far from home for that to be true. Then the scent hit her like a ton of bricks. Wolf. It was unmistakable. Every inch of her wanted to run, but muscles just would not cooperate. Besides, another part of her was curious. She had never met another of her kind. She forced her eyelids open as she felt this woman drag her to her feet.
She had kind features, which immediately put Lexi on edge, but her curiousity would not be stopped. She breathed in this woman's scent as if it was a meal, like she would never eat again. Elements of her own scent were there, yet something different, calming.
Speaking would be a good idea she chided herself, finally finding her tongue. "Th-thank you." She was surprised by how relaxed she felt simply by having this woman's arm around her. Not good. She pushed away, ignoring the head rush that followed. "I've got it from here. Just tell me where I am & where I can find food... I'm hungry."
As she pushed the hair out of her eyes, she noticed the blood on her palm. Careful to hide it from the woman, she balled her fist. She didn't want this stranger to leave just yet, but she she didn't want her asking questions. That sick curiousity won out again, because before she could stop the words, Lexi added, "wanna come with?"

Jordyn watched her internal battle for a moment, just holding her straight on her feet. The girl reminded her of her stepdaughter, Natalie had been damn stubborn and they had the same red hair. But that part of her life had been closed down for good now and a new chapter was opening its doors to her. Of course, the thing to learn about Jordyn is that she was once a great leader, and the only female to ever grace the ranks of Alpha. So there was more to her nature than a kind arm.
Her eyebrow twitched with amusement as this child insisted she was ok. But the words went off like unseen warning alarms. She was hungry. The girl could barely stand on her own feet and if she adn't eaten in days how many hours would it be before she decided hunting for food was a better idea than simply buying it. Here in mortopia, the child would need to be much more careful or she'd hand herself willingly to death.
Glancing over her shoulder Jordyn's sharp nose caught in the buzzing smell of the suberbs. It captured everything, honed and much practiced. She could of told you right then what the cat in the backgarden four houses away had had for breakfast from the smell of its excrimant.
The smell of blood brought her attention back to the girl. Jordyn let her go, removing her arm and watching to see if she really could stand on her own feet. Was there a backbone or was she just a pretty face? She didn't have time for pretty faces, after all the women in her pack- her lovers pack0 often had bigger balls than the men. There was a reason for that. The weak die fast.
Wanna come with me?
Jordyn's head tipped to the side, that was curious. "What you mean is, 'will you take me?'." she told the girl a stricker pattern in her tones. "After all, I can't come anywhere with you if you don't actually know where you are pup."
"When was the last time you ate? And can you walk?" She asked questions of her own now, but didn't offer her a hand or any indication that the girl should follow her as she turned to walk back the way she came.

Lexi fought back the urge to growl at the word "pup". It's what Declan used to call her when he was mad at her. Anytime she heard it, it made her feel 5 years old. Her eyes flashed & she was sure that this woman saw it. The last thing she needed was to piss off the first wolf she met that wasn't family. Her "tough bitch" act was wearing thin, & all she wanted was someone to connect with. Who knows how long she could keep things together on her own.
She quickened her pace to follow after this woman as she walked away, speaking quickly because Lexi had a feeling that if she didn't answer her, she would be left to her own devices once again. "Yeah, don't worry, I can keep up. & as for eating...Um..." She lowered her gaze to her feet because she had no idea. Two days? Four? The only thing on her mind was staying ahead of anyone chasing her, although at this point she assumed it was safe to rest for a bit. "It's been awhile. I usually eat on the move. Do you know where we are? How 'bout your name? How long have you been here? Were you followed?" She knew by peppering this stranger with questions meant that she would get some back, but she had to know.

To Jordyn she was a child, she was younger than her sons after all and the ex-alpha was gaining on forty now. Still the little fighter caught up with her, and Jordyn kept her pace the same. Before she could actually talk to the girl about where they were going on the plan out came this spirt of word vomit. She stoppped in her tracks, and blinked at the girl. Not out of mis-understanding but at her complete thoughtlessness. Here they were on the street and there she was acting like a non-mortal.
"First rule of survival there, pup, camflouge - yeh?" Jordyn addressed her patronisingly as she looked over her. She didn't look that badly wounded, and the more she talked the more she seemed like she was going to be more of a problem than a kindness. She pursed her lips, hand on newly healed hips and said further; "Calm down"
But, after glancing around for a moment and being the weary one she took their pace a little bit slower. She also answered the questions, although guardedly. "Yes I know where we are." She thought that was a stupid question but suposed the girl hadnt seen her comingout of the house."I've been here three weeks and no, I'm not stupid."
She ignored the name question. After all, names were very powerful and she'd learn the girls before she gave hers away. "Call me Kaine." She told her, using her fathers name for now.

Lexi cursed herself for being so panicked, & hated that she had let a stranger see her so weak. This time there was no stopping the low growl as once again there was "pup". There was an edge to her voice as she spoke, but she didn't care. She will not be treated like a child by a stranger or anyone else. She kept her voice low, so unwanted ears would not hear her.
"Kaine huh? I see. Camouflage? Ok I'll give you that. I never stay long enough to think of it & leave as soon as I get noticed, to be safe. From the look I just got, it's clear that I'm annoying you. I don't usually ask questions because I don't wanna answer the ones I'll get back, but this is different. I know what you are & you are the first one I've met that hasn't been family. I'm not about to leave now so I'll shut up if that will make things easier. I'm no rat, so don't even start thinking bad about me. I'm no pup either. I've gotten myself this far haven't i? I just figure you're alone, I'm alone, it's just easier to stick together. Now is there a plan or what?"
Something told her she just did a very stupid thing, but there's a small chance it could be seen as gutsy. Either way, she knew she was in for something but she's always been an "all or nothing", blunt kind of girl. If this woman couldn't handle her, Lexi'd just head out on her own again but she found herself desperately hoping that she wouldn't be left alone. She waited, stomach in knots.

Jordyn rolled her eyes as the girl, though not so she would notice unless she was looking. Maybe befriending her was a bad idea after all, she was talkative and irritating and rather immature. She was use to thoughtful people, people who only used words when they needed too- well okay so that was partly a lie, she was se to the women of the pack being thoughtful people right now this girl was acting up like more of a spoilt child than Perrin knew how to be, and he could be damn irritating.
I know what you are...
After that Jordyn wasn't listening and Lexi had earnt herself a growl of her own. Only Jordyn's wasn't low or nonthreatening. It was highly threatening and powerful, but so inautitable that it wouldnt be heard by the humans. The dog down the street however was a different matter. It whimpered, yelped like it had been hit and dropped to the groun terrified.
"Mind your mouth you stupid girl before you get us all killed." Jordyn was seconds away from losing her temper.
